This 6th Annual Walk/Run Raises Money for Free Mammogram Screenings

Houdrends of people are expected to attend a 5k walk/run at Coral Springs Medical Center’s 6th Annual Race for Women’s Wellness. The event supports the Lisa Boccard Breast Cancer Fund which provides free mammogram screenings to women who otherwise would not be able to afford them.
With breast cancer rates on the rise for the uninsured, this race was co-founded five years ago by two doctors from Coral Springs Medical Center (CSMC) – Dr. Mark Shachner, medical director of the Women’s Diagnostic & Wellness Center and Dr. David Silver, a gastroenterologist. Both have made it their mission to raise awareness and money in their fight against breast cancer.
The funds raised go directly to the Lisa Boccard Breast Cancer Fund, a fund created by Coral Springs Vice Mayor Vince Boccard and his wife Terry in honor of Vince’s sister Lisa and her fight against breast cancer. Lisa was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1991 and then again with metastatic breast cancer in 2006.
“The need to provide more women the opportunity for breast cancer screening is critical,” said Lisa. “There are too many women who are uninsured and go without their annual mammogram and I know too well that early diagnosis can be life saving,” said Boccard.
The Boccard’s joined forces with CSMC’s Women’s Diagnostic & Wellness Center to continue a joint mission to provide women in financial need living in northwest Broward County the ability to receive the proper breast medical care including early detection screenings.
To date, the race has raised nearly $70,000. In total, free mammograms were provided to over 500 women, and of those, more than 30 were diagnosed with cancer. For these diagnosed women early detection may be a life saving diagnosis that may not have been made possible without the support of these joined forces.
