Formed in 1999 and governed by an active Board of Directors, the Broward Health Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to improve the health of its community by providing resources to promote, support, and enhance the programs and initiatives of Broward Health. Broward Health operates with a mission to provide quality healthcare to the people it serves and to support the needs of all its physicians and employees. For more than seventy years, Broward Health has served as a healthcare “safety-net” provider for the northern two-thirds of Broward County – over 275 square miles.
Broward Health offers inpatient and outpatient services to the uninsured and underinsured – regardless of their ability to pay – and is one of the ten largest public healthcare systems in the nation. The Broward Health system includes Broward Health Medical Center, Broward Health North, Broward Health Imperial Point, Broward Health Coral Springs, Chris Evert Children’s Hospital, Broward Health Weston, and more than thirty Community Health Services facilities.
While quality medical care is the cornerstone of Broward Health, it is through Community Health Services that the health system truly connects with the community. It is the Division’s mission to provide a network of family health service sites that offer both affordable and comprehensive primary healthcare—including home health services and hospice services—throughout neighborhood community locations, primarily serving indigent patients and the working poor. Through a variety of school-based and neighborhood-oriented facilities, the Community Health Services Division provides pre-natal care, prevention and education, outreach, case/disease management, primary care, specialty care, urgent care, dental care, outpatient diagnostic testing, home health care, and hospice care. In fiscal year 2011, 24.4% of the care provided by Broward Health was uncompensated.
The Broward Health Foundation raises money through individual and corporate gifts, annual fund campaigns, nongovernmental grants, planned gifts, special events, and more. These fundraising strategies enable Broward Health to continue its mission through the deployment of state-of-the-art technologies, medical innovations, and staff support throughout its hospitals, health centers, and specialized offices. Funding also allows Broward Health to continue to address the needs of Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) designated medically-underserved areas/populations and Health Professional Shortage Areas within the Broward Health catchment area.
Contributions raised by the Broward Health Foundation assist the entire Broward Health system in its continuous effort to provide world-class healthcare to its diverse population. Past examples of fundraising priorities undertaken by the Broward Health Foundation include the construction of Broward Health's $1.2 million, 3,150-square-foot Pediatric Hematology and Outpatient Oncology Center and the $4.5 million, 13,000-square-foot Lillian S. Wells Women’s Health Center.
Donations received by the Broward Health Foundation have also been contributed regularly towards medical supplies and services, including: socks and hats for newborns at Broward Health Medical Center; mammograms for women who cannot afford them at Broward Health Coral Springs; medication and medical equipment for patients of Gold Coast Home Health and Hospice; improved vein finding equipment for patients at Broward Health North; and educational toys and materials for children with special needs at Broward Health Coral Springs.
Since its inception, the Broward Health Foundation has had the privilege of partnering with many community-oriented organizations. The Florida Panthers Foundation and the Big Bike Riders Children’s Foundation of Florida have aided the Foundation in supporting, sustaining, and improving Broward Health’s pediatric programs. The Lisa Boccard Breast Cancer Fund has assisted the Foundation in enabling Broward Health to provide high-quality, low-cost healthcare for women in need. Indeed, philanthropic alliances have been of immeasurable value to the Foundation, as demonstrated by: the provision of high-tech incubators for Broward Health’s neonatal intensive care unit; a world-class summer camp for children with diabetes; the construction of Broward Health’s Heart Center of Excellence; and respite care for the families of those with memory disorders.
Currently, the Broward Health Foundation is raising funds to renovate and expand Chris Evert Children’s Hospital, to refurbish Broward Health Medical Center’s hospice department, and to construct a new sports medicine center. To successfully meet these fundraising goals, the Foundation is raising money through individual and corporate gifts, annual fund campaigns (including an employee giving program and a physician giving program), nongovernmental grants, planned gifts, special events, and more.
In addition, the Broward Health Foundation has a governing Board of Directors that embraces a comprehensive development program through its firm commitment to strategic philanthropy. The Broward Health Foundation is located on the corner of Andrews Avenue and Davie Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
