
Broward Health Chris Evert Children’s Hospital Opens
NEW Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Center
Patients, donors, physicians, staff, community & more attend ribbon cutting.
Ft. Lauderdale, FL –Broward Health Chris Evert Children’s Hospital and the Broward Health Foundation opened the doors to the new Chris Evert Children’s Hospital Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Center at a ribbon cutting ceremony yesterday. More than 200 donors, patients, physicians, hospital commissioners, staff, administration and community members attended the event.
The $1.2 million dollar, 3,150 square foot expansion project, which commenced on September 1, 2008, was funded completely by donations from more than 2,500 individuals, schools and other organizations.
“This important project will make a difference in the lives of countless young people in Broward County who rely on the top-notch cancer treatment Broward Health provides,” said Michael S. Long, president of the Broward Health Foundation. “Seeing this unit come into existence is a milestone for our medical center and for our community and our foundation. Knowing that 100% of the cost to build this project came from the dedicated donors like the pre-med students at American Heritage School, The Rotary Club of Fort Lauderdale South, The Don Taft Foundation and the Dave and Loraine Thomas Foundation and others truly makes this a community success.
The new facility includes individual exam rooms, an infusion area decorated with child-friendly murals and a comprehensive pediatric cancer program staffed by two board-certified pediatric hematology/oncology physicians and a dedicated nursing staff The family-centered care philosophies that Chris Evert Children’s Hospital embraces will be forefront in this new facility which includes a 215 gallon salt-water fish tank, flat screen televisions, computers, video games and more. The Center’s program also includes a sibling program.
The Center will provide daily treatment for patients ages 21 and younger who need blood transfusions, chemotherapy infusions, lab draws, IV hydrations, sickle cell and oncology sick visits and wellness care, port flushes, bone marrow aspirations and biopsies and other infusions for rheumatology and gastroenterology patients.
Thank you to the more than 2,500 individuals, schools and organizations who have made the expansion of the Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Center at Chris Evert Children’s Hospital a reality. The total cost of the expansion, more than $1.2 million, was paid for entirely by donated funds.
